Rendezvous: Evi Tihemets and Kaupo Kikkas

Friends Evi Tihemets (b. 1932) and Kaupo Kikkas (b. 1983), a printmaker and photographer, meet in the shared exhibition space at Krulli Quarter.

Since the 1950s, Evi Tihemets has been capturing the essence of the Estonian landscape, weaving the subtle traces of human presence into her artworks. Her work spans from natural to urban spaces and industrial environments, focusing on the desire to uncover the essence of local mystique.

Decades later, Kaupo Kikkas undertook a similar journey, which resulted in the project "Traces," for which Erki Pärnoja composed original music. In 2023, in collaboration with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, this project was presented to a larger audience at Alexela Concert Hall. This audiovisual work is also displayed in the duo’s exhibition at Krulli.

Meanwhile, Evi Tihemet’s work “By the Sea” (1969) is revealed to the audience in new dimensions and forms in a video projection which offers the viewer the unique opportunity to be ‘inside’ the image.

Tihemets was one of the first to recognise a similar perception of the world and art, which can connect two people here and now, as well as across time. The exhibition is specifically created for the space of the old power station constructed in the 1930s, which is now open to visitors for the first time.
