“Piano in the Forest”
2024 -
The object of the installation is an Estonia grand piano, placed open with the pianist’s chair, ready to play deep in an Estonian forest. We are invited to observe how nature gradually reclaims human creation and redirects matter back into circulation according to its own laws. This is a monument to time, music, and nature.
The centerpiece of the installation is a time‑lapse video that will be created over 15 years, showing the accelerated changes and cycles of nature. The trees will grow, the landscape will transform, and the piano will eventually collapse.
The second phase of the installation involves works created by various artists, each adding their own layer to the Piano in the Forest installation. It begins with Norwegian composer Henning Kraggerud, German clarinetist Kilian Herold, the virtual instrument company Orchestral Tools, and many others.
The instrument itself is an Estonia grand piano, number 534, built in 1966. Before becoming part of the installation, it served at the Tallinn Conservatoire (later the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre) and the Tallinn Music High School, before being permanently retired in the late 2000s.
The installation is located in a hidden site within the Estonian wilderness.
