Traces

Traces examines the coexistence of human beings and nature. In this long-term project I have attempted to maintain a positive and hopeful outlook. Pain and suffering surround us in abundance, but when walking in the natural world you can find hope with every step, witnessing nature rebound, reclaiming what was taken from it. Traces is a visual exploration of how nature adapts and returns.

My projects carry me to a wide variety of places around the planet, but Traces has been many years in the making in my home country of Estonia. Traces is also a study of myself, who I am, where I come from, and it explores this unseen force which binds me to my homeland. Estonia’s history is one of seismic cultural disruption – it has experienced six transformations in its ruling power structure in just over a century – and an attentive viewer will see history present in the landscape, sometimes quite clearly, sometimes almost imperceptibly.

Traces is also a poetic view of the departed. Behind every passing is a story, and often a tragic one. A story which is forgotten and lost, though there are silent signs in the landscape, like dreams I have been witness to, that I have tried to listen to.

Traces contains monochrome still photographs and videos.
